316L Austenitic Stainless Steel (ASS) and 430 Ferritic Stainless Steel (FSS) are difficult to weld because of their inherent properties. The performance of the joints lies behind the stresses developed in the joint. Uneven stresses development leads to fracture, fatigue and failure.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) gives the powerful approach to study the stresses developed in the joint. This study helps the engineers to optimize the stresses developed between the joint.
The spot-welding joint is widely used in automotive industries for joining chassis, bodywork and catalytic converter part. Therefore, the simulation of welding force is very important for the vehicle design. In this, we first welded the plates with spot welding machine and the experimentation was performed to find the ultimate, yield strength and percentage elongation. The experimentation values were compared with the simulation done with ANSYS R18.2. In ANSYS R18.2 first the model is prepared. Then the meshing was done. The boundary conditions were considered. After considering the boundary conditions the stresses (Von Misses Stress) were calculated and it was compared with experimentation results. It was found that the experimental results are in counterpart with ANSYS results.
