This tutorial demonstrates how to use the element birth technique in Abaqus with Python scripting, a powerful method for simulating material addition in processes like welding and additive manufacturing. While newer versions of Abaqus offer built-in options, this technique remains one of the most flexible and widely used approaches especially when combined with the “quiet element” method for simulating powder in SLM/SLS processes.
The model is first built in Abaqus/CAE. Then, using Python, you’ll learn how to select specific elements and control their activation during the simulation. This allows for better scalability and automation in large models. A PowerPoint file is also included, introducing the method and its applications. The tutorial is short (under 15 minutes) and includes both the Python code and the CAE model output to help you get started quickly.
