Product Overview:
In this example, we analyze the Koyna Dam, which experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale on December 11, 1967. This simulation illustrates a typical application of concrete damage modeling based on traction-separation laws. The dam is modeled as a two-dimensional part with damage material properties.
Before the dynamic simulation of the earthquake, the dam is subjected to gravity loading and hydrostatic pressure. In the Abaqus/Standard analysis, these loads are specified in two consecutive static steps: the first step applies a distributed gravity load (labeled as GRAV), while the second step applies hydrostatic pressure (labeled as HP).
To model physical crack growth, the XFEM procedure has been selected. During the analysis, based on tensile damage as described in the Abaqus documentation, crack propagation within the dam is observed.
