Product Overview:
In this tutorial, we investigate the simulation of shear failure between two steel plates connected by bolts using Abaqus. The steel plates are modeled as three-dimensional solid parts, while bolts of varying sizes are also represented as three-dimensional solid parts.

For this simulation, we utilize a steel material characterized by elastic-plastic behavior. To accurately predict the damaged zones and failure modes, we employ both ductile and shear damage criteria. The ductile criterion is a phenomenological model that predicts the onset of damage due to the nucleation, growth, and coalescence of voids. The shear criterion, on the other hand, is designed to forecast damage onset due to shear band localization.

A dynamic explicit step is used to apply dynamic loading as tension at the end of the upper plate. Surface-to-surface contact properties are established for all interaction domains. Fixed boundary conditions are assigned to the end of the bottom steel plate, while a displacement with smooth amplitude is applied to the end of the upper plate. To achieve a more refined mesh, partitions are created for each bolt, ensuring the mesh is fine enough to accurately capture the correct failure modes and shapes.

Upon completion of the simulation, a comprehensive set of results, including damage, failure, stress, and strain, becomes available. The simulation reveals that the upper plate experiences failure during load application, culminating in complete damage.
