Simulation of Composite Column (Steel Beam and Concrete) under Cyclic Loading in Abaqus

About Course

Product Overview:
In this tutorial, we explore the simulation of a composite column composed of a steel beam and concrete subjected to cyclic loading using Abaqus. The steel beam and concrete components are modeled as three-dimensional solid parts.

For the steel beam, an elastic-plastic material model with a ductile damage criterion is employed to account for damage and failure during cyclic loading. The concrete is modeled using concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) to effectively predict tensile and compressive damage behavior.

A general static step is utilized in the simulation, and ideal or perfect contact is assumed between the steel beam and the concrete column’s surfaces. Fixed boundary conditions are assigned to the bottom side of the composite column, while a displacement with a tabular amplitude is applied to the top side to define the loading protocol.

It’s essential to ensure that the mesh is sufficiently refined, and proper partitioning is used for both the steel and concrete parts to enhance accuracy.

After running the simulation, results including tensile and compressive damage for the concrete, as well as stress and strain data for both the steel beam and the concrete, can be obtained.
