Product Overview:
In this tutorial, we investigate the simulation of a steel beam-column structure reinforced with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) subjected to cyclic loading using Abaqus. The steel beam and column are modeled as three-dimensional shell parts, while the CFRP plates are represented as planar shell parts.
To accurately model the behavior of steel under cyclic loading, the combined plasticity material model is employed. This model effectively predicts material behavior throughout each loading cycle. For the CFRP material, engineering constants and Hashin’s damage criterion are utilized to characterize its performance and failure modes.
A general static step is used, with modifications made to the convergence criteria to ensure stability during analysis. An ideal or perfect contact assumption is applied between the steel beam and the steel column, as well as between the steel beam and the CFRP sheets. Fixed boundary conditions are assigned to both the top and bottom ends of the steel column, while a displacement with a specified amplitude is applied to the end of the steel beam as part of the loading protocol.
The use of a fine mesh significantly enhances the accuracy of the simulation results.
Upon completing the analysis, various results, including stress, strain, displacement, and hysteresis diagrams, can be obtained.
