This tutorial explores the process of simulating an SPH-based explosion near an RC slab using the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model combined with strain-rate effects in Abaqus. The RC slab is constructed as a 3D solid model, while the steel reinforcements are represented as 3D wire elements. The explosive material, TNT, is modeled as a spherical 3D solid.
The CDP model effectively captures the damage and plastic behavior of concrete, making it one of the most commonly used models for concrete failure and damage in engineering applications. This model relies on strain-dependent tensile and compressive properties to accommodate rapid deformation scenarios. Steel bar behavior is simulated using an elastic-plastic material model that includes strain-rate dependency. For the TNT explosive, the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state is applied, simulating pressure generated from chemical energy release in a controlled, non-shock initiation approach.
In this analysis, the Dynamic Explicit step is selected due to its suitability for high-speed simulations like explosions. The embedded region constraint is applied for the steel bars within the concrete slab, and the general contact feature is activated to handle all interactions within the domain. Boundary conditions are fixed on two sides of the RC slab to ensure stability. To accurately observe tensile cracking patterns, the mesh resolution is refined.
Upon running the simulation, users can access a range of results, including stress, strain, tensile and compressive damage, and displacement.
